5 Reasons Why Sex is Important in a Relationship

Sex and relationships are inexorably linked. The idea that sex can be separated from the rest of your relationship is a fallacy; it is part of who you are as partners, and it will affect your entire union and dynamic as a couple. That’s why it’s important to keep your sexual health in mind not just while you’re in a relationship, but even before you begin one with someone new — to ensure that you have everything you need to maintain a healthy sex life long into the future. Here are five reasons why sex (and therefore sexual health) should be an integral part of every relationship.

1) Having sex makes you happier
People who have sex on a regular basis report being happier than those who abstain. (Abstinence, by itself, is known to cause depression.) They’re also better able to handle stress, deal with anger and control their impulses. And if you’re on your way out of a marriage or long-term relationship, having sex can help ease you into single life—in other words, it doesn’t make you miss your ex more.

2) Sex can be your best medicine
Making love can lower stress levels, reduce pain and boost your immune system. It also increases levels of oxytocin, which is known as the cuddle hormone because it promotes feelings of calmness and bonding.

3) Sex relieves stress
A lot of people associate sex with stress relief, and it’s easy to see why. You can experience increased heart rate, increased blood flow, muscle relaxation—all of which help calm you down. It doesn’t have to be complicated; even something like touching your partner’s shoulder while making eye contact has been shown to release tension in both parties involved. There are a multitude of ways that sex relieves stress, so try them all out!

4) Having sex reduces pain
There are some studies that show that after having sex, endorphins are released and pain is reduced.

5) Sexual intimacy improves sleep
A good sex life can have many health benefits. It’s been linked to healthier hearts, reduced stress and higher self-esteem. And that’s just for starters! Regular sexual activity may also be key to getting a better night’s sleep, according to recent research. In fact, even watching romantic movies or playing board games with your partner can improve sleep quality for some people.
